Japan volcano

Efforts to recover the bodies of at least 24 climbers have been suspended again after the eruption on Japan's Mount Ontake intensified.
A BBC correspondent near the mountain on Tuesday said the volcano was shooting out even more ash, smoke and rocks than before.
At least 36 people are thought to have died in Saturday's unexpected eruption.
Dozens of other people were injured in the incident on the mountain, which is about 200km (125 miles) west of Tokyo.
Hundreds of firefighters, police and troops have been involved in search operations.
Twelve bodies have been recovered so far. Another 24 are reported to be on the mountain, including five more located on Monday.
Japanese authorities only declare fatalities once the body has been examined by a doctor.
Some of the bodies were found in a lodge near the summit and others were buried in ash up to 50cm (20in) deep, Japanese media reported.
Tremors
The BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes was observing the volcano from a distance of around 6km (4 miles).
He said there was a great increase in the amount of material and gas being ejected on Tuesday.
An official from Japan's meteorological agency said volcanic tremors in the area could mean that another explosion was on the way.
"The strength of the tremors increased late last night, diminished and then rose again early this morning. There's the chance things could get even worse, so caution is needed," Yasuhide Hasegawa told Reuters news agency.
"This points to possibly increasing pressure due to steam inside the volcano, and if it exploded rocks could be thrown around, endangering rescuers," he said.
Japan's meteorological agency has warned that volcanic debris may settle within 4km (2.5 miles) of the peak.

week 4-ice bucket challenge

The media is reaching saturation point in its coverage of the ice bucket challenge. But what has actually been achieved?
The format is simple - somebody has water, often full of ice cubes, dumped over their head. They then nominate people they know to undertake the same challenge.
There have been in excess of 2.4 million ice bucket-related videos posted on Facebook, and 28 million people have uploaded, commented on or liked ice bucket-related posts.
On image sharing website Instagram there have been 3.7 million videos uploaded with the hashtags #ALSicebucketchallenge and #icebucketchallenge. Justin Bieber's has been the most popular - with about one million "likes".
The stunt is typically intended to raise money and awareness for the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association. Its British equivalent, the Motor Neurone Disease Association, has also benefited.
From 29 July to 28 August this year ALS received $98.2m - compared with $2.7m donated during the same period last year.
Pre-ice bucket, the MND Association would receive on average £200,000 a week in donations. From 22 to 29 August, it received £2.7m.
In the UK, other charities have benefited with Macmillan Cancer Support raising £3m from challenges. Water Aid has seen a spike in donations, including £47,000 in one day - 50% higher than it ever received in a single day before. The money came in part from people bemoaning the water wasted in the challenges.
But the other purpose of the campaign has been in raising awareness.
"Do you think Anna Wintour, Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham were talking about ALS a few months ago? No, I very much doubt it," says Shannon Murray, an actor, writer and disability rights campaigner.
"It's been very celebrity-orientated and it plays into our culture of putting everything about ourselves out there on social media. Some people have chosen to do it in a bikini, some have chosen white T-shirts, some people have obviously done it to raise their profile and that's up to them. Personally it makes me a bit uncomfortable, but actually the bottom line is that people weren't talking about MND two months ago, and now they are."
A crude measurement can be found in Google searches. Searches for both ALS and Lou Gehrig's Disease, an alternative name in the US, rose sharply from 13 August to a peak on 21 August. Since then they have been declining. The term MND rose sharply from 20 August, reaching a peak on 26 August.
From 1 August to 27 August this year, the ALS Wikipedia page had 2,717,754 views. This compared with the 1,662,842 people who had visited the page during the whole of the preceding 12 months, according to data company Dataviz.
Average daily visits to the ALS association website were about 17,500 before the ice bucket challenge, compared with the peak of 4.5 million visits on 20 August (of which 83% were new to the site). During the past month there have been about 30 million visitors in total.
Average daily website visits to the MND association have risen from 1,400 to 153,000 on its biggest day - 26 August.
And as of 29 August the ice bucket challenge had 4,483,726 Twitter mentions. ALS Twitter followers had increased from 8,975 in early July to 21,100, while MND had over 6,000 new followers.
So it's probably safe to say that awareness has been increased.

week 3-Vietnam anti China protest

Hundreds of people across Vietnam have protested against China's role in a sea dispute - the largest rallies of their kind recently in the communist country.
In the capital, Hanoi, demonstrators sang patriotic songs and held up placards opposite the Chinese embassy.
Tensions have been running high after Vietnamese ships clashed with Chinese vessels guarding an oil rig in a contested area of the South China Sea.
The protests appear to have the Vietnamese government's approval.
The country's communist authorities have broken up previous anti-China demonstrations because of fears that they may be hijacked by pro-democracy activists, says the BBC's Asia Pacific editor, Charles Scanlon.
Nevertheless, he says, Hanoi has also used the demonstrations to communicate its anger over what it sees as Beijing's aggressive infringement of Vietnamese sovereignty. The BBC's Charles Scanlon says Vietnam's authorities rarely allow such rallies, so they are a sign of the extent of the country's anger
The protesters opposite the Chinese embassy on Sunday included war veterans and students.
"This is the largest anti-Chinese demonstration I have ever seen in Hanoi," a war veteran named Dang Quang Thang told the AFP news agency.
"Our patience has limits. We are here to express the will of the Vietnamese people to defend our territory at all costs. We are ready to die to protect our nation," he is quoted as saying.
Large anti-China protests were also seen in other Vietnamese cities.

week 2-world cup

errard, 34, won his first cap in a 2-0 win over Ukraine in 2000 and made his last England appearance in a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica at the 2014 World Cup.The Liverpool midfielder said: "I have enjoyed every minute of representing my country. It's a sad day for me."Gerrard will now take on a "high profile" ambassadorial role with the Football Association. He retires from international duty having scored 21 goals and played at six major tournaments. He ranks third on England's most-capped player list behind only Peter Shilton (125) and David Beckham (115)."It is the right decision for England, Liverpool and most importantly for a player who had earned the right to choose his own time of departure. He may not have touched the same heights for country as he did for club, but he still made a fine contribution to several eras for England."Gerrard skippered England at this summer's World Cup in Brazil, however it was to end in disappointment for Roy Hodgson's team after they exited the tournament bottom of the group and without a victory."It was a very difficult decision to make," said Gerrard. "It's something I have been contemplating for a long time, not just since the end of the World Cup."I've had to take an awful lot of advice from people who are close to me - players that I still play with, ex-players who I played with a long time ago, managers who I played for years ago."It's been a really tough decision, certainly one of the toughest since I turned professional at 18."England manager Hodgson said: "While I'm disappointed, I can entirely understand Steven's situation and can have no complaints given the incredible service he has given to his country."Gerrard will continue his club career with Liverpool, for whom he made his debut in 1998 against Blackburn Rovers. He has spent his entire career at Anfield - winning the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.

week 1-馬拉拉

Malala Yousafzai was at a fitting place today when she was named the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize: school.
Malala, 17, is the youngest person to ever win the award.
She was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman two years ago in Pakistan for insisting that girls have the right to an education. Her recovery and activism efforts continue in Birmingham, England, a worldwide inspiration for her spirit and determination.
Malala shares the honor with Kailash Satyarthi, 60, of India, with both recognized by the Norwegian Nobel Committee "for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education."
She is expected to make a statement later today.
Malala was considered a favorite for the award in 2013, but fell short to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
This year, Malala has used her platform on a global level, pushing for help in the search for Nigerian schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram militants. She spoke with ABC News in July about her second Nobel Peace Prize nomination.

“Last year, I said that I do not deserve it, and I still say that because I have started a campaign and it’s not over yet,” she told ABC News’ Amy Robach. “It’s not completed yet. And when I see that I have done something and I have achieved this big goal which I always dreamed for, then I’ll think that OK, now I deserve it.”
